Roger Schroeder, Chief of Police

Roger SchroederSince February 1999, Roger Schroeder has served as the Chief of Police of the Jefferson City Police Department. The department is comprised of 89 sworn and 37 civilian full-time personnel; all of whom are assigned to one of three divisions: operations, special services, and support services.

A native of Jefferson City, Roger graduated from Jefferson City High School, and obtained Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Criminal Justice Administration from Central Missouri State University. While at UCM he was a member of the gamma chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Police Science Honor Society.

He began his post graduate career as a criminal justice planner with the Greater Southwest Regional Planning Commission. The GSRPC served 19 southwest Kansas counties in all facets of local government. His responsibilities included: developing and implementing comprehensive planning and management techniques in controlling specific crime problems, implementing new programs, and in developing projects in crime reduction and criminal justice improvements.

Chief Schroeder spent 17 years with the Garden City, Kansas, Police Department, serving as their Chief of Police for 8 years. He was responsible for the administrative and professional operation of a 91-person municipal police department: planning, directing, supervising and evaluating the work activities, programs and procedures of the department. He would formulate and advise the city manager regarding department polices and regulations.

Upon returning to Jefferson City to be closer to family, Roger was employed by the Cole County Sheriff’s Office as an Investigator, before being appointed by the 19th Judicial Circuit Court as Chief Juvenile Officer/Director of the Prenger Family Center. He was responsible for the administrative and professional operation of the Juvenile Division of the 19th Judicial Circuit, State of Missouri. His responsibilities included planning, directing, supervising and evaluating the work activities, programs and procedures of the Prenger Family Center, which combines an 18-bed emergency care facility and an 8-bed secure detention unit.

Chief Schroeder was appointed by Governor Matt Blunt to the Missouri Medal of Valor Governor’s Advisory Board and still serves in that capacity under the authority of Governor Jay Nixon. He is a lifetime member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and a member of the Missouri Police Chief’s Association Board of Officers. He received the Excellence Award from the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police, and was appointed by Kansas Governor Robert Bennet to the Governor’s Criminal Justice Review Panel.

Chief Schroeder’s community involvement includes membership in the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Police Chief’s Association, Council for Drug Free Youth, Local Emergency Planning Committee, Cole County Chief’s Association, Capital Area Community Service Association, Jefferson City Public Schools Multi-Ethnic Advisory Council, Missouri Juvenile Justice Association, Mid-Missouri Major Case Squad, and Community Resource Council. Chief Schroeder also serves as an Ex Officio member of the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service Board, and as advisor for Crimestoppers, and the Capital Region Board of Directors.
