Handi-Wheels Ride Guide

JEFFTRAN serves clients who qualify under the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) with Handi-Wheels, a paratransit service which operates during our regular business hours and is a "origin to destination " service.

Handi-Wheels can pick up clients inside the city limits and take them to any destination within the city limits which can be safely reached. All buses are wheelchair-lift equipped and provide transportation for individuals who because of disability cannot travel to or from a fixed route bus stop or cannot get on, ride or get off a fixed route bus.

Pickup or drop off locations outside the city limits cannot be scheduled.

Certain conditions at pickup and drop-off locations may make curb-to-curb Handi-wheels service impossible due to safety concerns. Dangerous parking, an unsafe loading area, low-hanging branches or an area that requires the Paratransit vehicle to back up are examples of unsafe conditions for the paratransit vehicle. In such cases, riders must choose a safe alternative location for pickup or drop-off.

Handi-Wheels riders must apply for and be approved in order to use this service. Applications and detailed service descriptions are available in standard print and accessible formats from:

With many clients in Jefferson City who qualify under ADA for this service, and with as many as 250 riders each day, it is necessary to schedule rides at least one day in advance. Our paratransit service uses computer software to schedule these rides. The dispatch/scheduling phone number is (573) 634-6477.

Handi-Wheels fares are $3.00 per ride (not round trip). Drivers aid passengers (when needed) to board (including securing wheel chairs) and they aid passengers when exiting the bus (when needed). If a passenger requires additional help, i.e., getting into a business or office, Handi-Wheels will provide transportation for an attendant (provided by the passenger) at no additional charge.
