Contractor Licensing

All contractors performing work in Jefferson City must have a local license. 

Electrical and Plumbing Contractors and their employees are required to obtain specific trade licenses directly from the Building Regulations Division prior to beginning any project within city limits.  Learn more about licensing requirements for these trades:

All other contractors are directed to the Business License Division to obtain their business license.

Please note that homeowners may perform work on the home they reside in without a license, however, they are required to obtain a building permit and inspections if the work is not listed below:

WORK EXEMPT FROM LICENSES AND BUILDING PERMITS:

No trade license or permit is required for the performance of the following residential unit electrical work:
Receptacle replacement (110 volt only)

Single pole switch replacement
Garbage disposals (plug in only)
Light fixtures (110 volt only)
Ceiling fan replacement
Furnace motor replacement
Water heating element (electrical) replacement
Smoke detector replacement
Stove element replacement

No trade license or permit is required for the performance of the following residential plumbing work:
Water faucet repair/replacement

Toilet tank fixtures repair/replacement
Bathroom stool replacement
Bathroom/kitchen drains unclogging
